When one leaves the village of Engelberg and passes by the "Genisee" artificial lake, one can cross either two bridges. The first one is contemporary and can not be seen in this picture. It is used for cars going to Örtigen. The second, old, crosses the river in a graceful stride. That bridge is on a route that has been important, which has been abandoned since modern times. It is the Jochpass. The Jochpass is an easy pass that enables to reach Gental, and further Meiringen’s area, from Engelberg. It must be a very old road since Neolithic remains (a smooth stone axe) have been found nearby. What is missing in this picture is the foaming water under the bridge. This is a consequence of the water’s harnessing for the Genisee and the, all too often, non compliance with the residual water level. |
