The Grand Saint-Bernard hospice

The Grand Saint-Bernard hospice

The Grand Saint-Bernard hospice is among these places that have something special. When one climbs to it in winter, one crosses a completely unfriendly world to reach it. Even in march is the winter in full swing at these heights.

When one comes to the hospice, one reaches a warm and convivial place that is in total contrast with the outside world. Within a few meters, one passes from an unfriendly environment to a haven of peace.

Here we are on the Italian side, on the edge of a plateau where a small lake is during summer.

In spite of what the picture might lead to think, the climb to the hospice can be really difficult when the bad weather comes in.

In case of nice weather, the climb with cross-country skis or snowshoes does not show some particular problems starting from Bourg Saint-Bernard. One can expect to take one hour and up to one hour and a half starting from the parking to reach the hospice.
